Highly unusual hand made woodblock print is by Chikanobu Hashimoto (1838-1912). "Musume Sugata" (The Figure of The Woman) this is a re-carved edition. First printed Meiji 30 nen (1897). Signed on the left of the image. This elegant larger re-carved edition by Soudosha Publishers from a limited edition series of only 980 sheets and published on October 1, 1977. Beautifully embossed, please see pictures. Once tipped to the original presentation folder. Pristine Condition. Flawless, bright colors with fill margins. Please see superb details. Please notice mouse in hair ornament. Wonderful Japanese woodblock print. One of Chikanobu's more popular and recognized works. Chikanobu created 36 sheets Bijin -ga set "Shinbijin", all Bijin-ga prints with Meiji era customs. This set is called the best masterpiece in his life. This print is one of them.
Hashimoto Chikanobu (1838-1912) was known by several names, originally as Hashimoto Tadayoshi, then in accordance with naming practices of the day, he was later given his artist name of Chikanobu by his master Toyohara Kunichika.

The reason can be found in the Japanese name for owl, Fukuro, which can be written in different sets of characters: One with the meaning of luck ( fuku, luck; ku, to come; ro suffix used in boys' names), and the other as protection from hardship ( fu, no, kurou hardship, suffering). Jakuchu Ito (1716-1800) was a well-known Japanese painter of the mid-Edo period. He studied Kano painting in Kyoto where he was born as the son of a rich merchant. He became a famous artist as a painter and printmaker of exotic birds, flowers, and Buddhist subjects. Teruhide Kato had studied at Kyoto Art College. He was a famous kimono fashion designer. When he was 50 years old, he decided to follow his real passion and became a traditional Kyoto woodblock artist. Success remained with the artist. After a gallery exhibition in New York and a book publication of his works titled "Kyoto Romance", he is as famous as a woodblock artist as he used to be as a kimono designer.
