Kogan Tobari

5209

The small woodblock print "New Year's Card, 1921" is by Kogan Tobari (1882-1927). It was first printed in 1921; this is a later printing from the original blocks in 1976, published by Gendai Hanga Center. The printer is Kikuo Gosho. It is still adhered to the original presentation paper, which bears information including the title (later print), artist's name, edition number, printer's name, date, and publisher's name.

In 1921, the Year of the Rooster (Birds) in the Japanese zodiac, the design depicts a man and a woman flying as birds. It is very interesting.

Kogan Tobari (1882-1992) was born in Tokyo. He is a well-known print artist, sculptor, and water color artist. Although he passed away at the young age of 45, the works he left behind have received rave reviews.
