- Tōjinbō (Tōjinbō Cliffs) -

The spectacular woodblock print “Tōjinbō” (Tōjinbō Cliffs) by Takeji Asano is from his series "Eight Scenes of Mountains and Seas". Printed in Shōwa 34 (1959), the work depicts the dramatic coastal scenery of Tōjinbō, a famous site of towering cliffs overlooking the Sea of Japan in Mikuni-chō, Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture. While the composition conveys the powerful landscape with remarkable simplicity and boldness, the crashing waves below are rendered with exceptional skill and vitality.

The title “Tōjinbō” and “Takeji ga, tō” (“Drawn and carved by Takeji”) appear in Japanese in the lower-right corner of the image. The left margin includes the date “Shōwa 34 nen saku Takeji kore suru” (“Printed by Takeji in 1959”).
