- Tochigi (Tochigi, Uzuma River) -

The remarkable woodblock print "Tochigi" (Tochigi, Uzuma River) is by Junichiro Sekino. Part of the Oku no Hosomichi series, this print captures the serene view of the riverside along the Uzuma River in Tochigi Prefecture. The flow of the river is beautifully expressed through the wood grain, while the willow branches hanging in the foreground create a graceful rhythm and contrast.

The Japanese title and the artist's red seal appear in the lower right corner of the image. Dated "'81," it is hand-signed "Jun. Sekino," with the sheet number and watermark on the bottom margin.

The Uzuma River supported Tochigi City, known as the commercial capital of northern Kanto. It was a thriving wholesale town from the end of the Edo period through the early Showa period. It is said that many shipping wholesalers and wealthy merchants lined both banks of the river, and white-walled storehouses still remain today.
