Splendid modern Bijin-ga print "Sarasa" (Modern beauty in Sarasa) is by Matazo Kayama (1927-2004). Matazo Kayama was a Japanese Nihon-ga painter of the 20th century, born in Kyoto in 1927. He is a well-known artist in Japan and also a worldwide artist. Many of his artworks have been sold at famous auctions, including Christie's New York. This print is highly desirable and hard to find. This print shows modern and cool Japanese beauty. Very exotic and mysterious mood. Japanese Sarasa is a type of Japanese Kimono fabric with a chintz pattern printed. Sarasa was originally a woodblock printed, painted, or stained calico produced in India from 1600 to 1800. It is a very exotic design and very popular in Japan.
All information about this print is on the right margin. Original woodblock print by Matazo Kayama and title "Sarasa" in Japanese, model name, carver name, printer name. Printed in 1989, and edition number 17/200, Publisher name. Pencil signed by the artist on the bottom of the information.
I just want to add information about his model. Her name is Yufu (written Yufu but called Yuu, a very old way to read) She was his student at Tama Art University. Kayama had used the same model 'Yuu" for 13 years and he made 3,500 sketches of her. Her husband is also Kayama's student and artist. I read a book and it was very interesting. Yuu became a Nihon-ga (Japanese painting), artist, after retiring from being the model for Kayama.
