- Sara-Mawashi (The Plate Spinner), 1975 -

The rare and humorous woodblock print "Sara-Mawashi" (The Plate Spinner), printed in 1975, is by Takeji Asano (1900–1999). The composition portrays a performer spinning a plate atop a slender stick, with bold lines and a limited palette creating a lively sense of rhythm and movement. The striking contrast between black, white, and a terracotta background, together with the simplified geometric forms, gives the print a powerful visual presence. It is a wonderful example of Asano's distinctive style, perfectly balancing strength, simplicity, and playful abstraction. Its dynamic, modern design makes it especially well suited to contemporary interiors and pairs beautifully with mid-century décor.

The Japanese title "皿まわし" (Sara-Mawashi), the artist's hand-signed name "浅野竹二", and the pencil signature "T. Asano" appear in the lower margin. The number 289 (likely the artist's design number) is written in pencil at the lower right corner. The block signature "T.a." together with the date '75 appears within the lower left of the image.

Signed: Block signed "T.a." with the date '75 within the image. Hand-signed by the artist in both Japanese and English in pencil below the image.
Condition: Overall, in very good condition for its age. There are a few minor ink smudges in the margins, as shown. These are characteristic of boldly printed Sōsaku Hanga woodblock prints and do not detract from the artwork. There is also a tiny, faint spot on the upper right margin and a touch of very light toning (light foxing) in the lower right margin. Both are extremely subtle and barely noticeable. The image itself is in superb condition with fresh, vibrant colors. Please refer to the photographs.
