The remarkable woodblock print "Katsura Rikyu I (Katsura Imperial Villa I)" is by Masao Ido (1945–2016). This large vertical composition beautifully captures the elegance of the Katsura Imperial Villa. Situated in the western suburbs of Kyoto, the villa serves as a detached palace of the Imperial Family—a masterpiece of Japanese garden design and sukiya architecture that has harmoniously embodied tranquility and refined aesthetics since the early Edo period.
Through the use of straight lines, light, and shadow, the artist magnificently conveys a crisp and refined Japanese aesthetic, expressing a sense of quiet simplicity and understated beauty.
