Beautiful bijin-ga woodblock print Kamisuki (“Combing the Hair”) by Kotondo Torii (1900–1976). Kamisuki is one of the works from the series Twelve Aspects of Women and is considered the most popular and iconic design. Originally published in 1929, this print is a later edition by Ishu Kanko Kai, issued in a limited edition of 100 prints.
It is printed on beautiful Japanese washi paper with the “Sanso” watermark. The carving was done by Susumu Ito, and the printing by Matashiro Uchikawa. Torii’s red seal of approval (copyright) and the publisher’s red moneybag seal appear on the lower left margin. The limited-edition publication seal is stamped beneath the box.
Please note the incredible bokashi shading—exquisite and distinctly Japanese in character. A perfect example of a classic bijin-ga print.
