- Irodori ( Autumn Tints) -

The striking color mezzotint print “Irodori” (Autumn Tints) is by Atsushi Shimizu (b. 1937). The composition presents a richly colored woodland filled with warm oranges, reds, yellows, and greens, contrasted by tall, dark evergreens. Rounded deciduous trees and slender conifers repeat across the landscape in a gentle rhythm, creating a wonderful sense of depth. The softly blended colors and textured surface give the scene a calm, dreamlike atmosphere while beautifully capturing the richness of an autumn forest.

Atsushi Shimizu is a Japanese printmaker best known for his refined mezzotints and richly colored copperplate prints. Born in Tokyo in 1937, he began his artistic career as a painter before turning to copperplate printmaking. After moving to Hokkaido in 1963, he taught himself etching and went on to develop a highly individual approach to mezzotint. In 1976, he studied burin technique at the print room of the Hamburg Museum of Art in Germany. Shimizu is especially admired for his poetic images of nature and his mastery of delicate color and atmosphere.
