- Heart island -

This magnificent woodblock print, Heart Island, is by Mitsuru Hiraki (b. 1958). A vivid heart glows at the center of the composition, surrounded by softly radiating layers that create the impression of a gentle pulse. The heart’s luminous gold background is accented with orange, green, yellow, and pink, while the surrounding gradations of purple and blue bring a peaceful, dreamlike quality to the work. The interplay of brilliant color, delicate textures, and botanical forms creates a composition that feels both uplifting and soothing.

Hiraki often draws inspiration from familiar forms found in nature—seeds, leaves, petals, and even the shape of a heart—capturing their quiet and understated beauty.

Born in Yamaguchi Prefecture in 1958, Hiraki earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from Tama Art University in 1983. He has received numerous awards and exhibited his work in Japan and internationally. His prints are rarely available on the market, making them wonderful hidden gems for collectors.
