Kanko dance is a Buddhist chanting dance that is popular in Mie Prefecture. The name comes from the dance being performed while beating a kakko, a gagaku (traditional Japanese court music) drum, and has evolved to "kanko dance." It is performed during the Obon season to offer prayers for ancestors who are celebrating their first Obon. It is said that it has come to be known in Mie Prefecture because the kakko was once played at Ise Jingu Shrine. Kanko Dance, which still exists in different forms in different regions of Mie Prefecture, is a local performing art that dates back more than 1,000 years.
