- Dōtonbori no Yoi (Evening at Dōtonbori, Osaka) -

The amazing woodblock print "Dōtonbori no Yoi" (Evening at Dōtonbori, Osaka) is by Tomikichiro Tokuriki. This is one of my favorite prints by Tokuriki. The title "Dōtonbori no Yoi" (Evening at Dōtonbori) and the publisher's name "Matsukyu" appear in the lower right margin, while the subtitle "Dōtonbori" and the artist's signature "Tomi" are located in the upper left of the image. Although this impression does not feature a handwritten pencil signature, it was printed during the late Shōwa period while the artist was still alive and is therefore an authentic lifetime impression rather than a later posthumous printing.

This striking nighttime view beautifully captures the lively atmosphere of Dōtonbori, one of Osaka's most famous entertainment districts. Lined with restaurants, cafés, theaters, bars, and brightly illuminated storefronts, the area comes alive after dark. Tokuriki masterfully contrasts the deep blue night sky and river with the brilliant glow of neon signs, whose colorful reflections shimmer across the water. A graceful bridge spans the canal, while a small boat glides quietly below, creating a beautiful balance between the bustling city and the calm surface of the river. The vivid reflections are especially captivating, making this one of Tokuriki's most memorable views of Dōtonbori.
