- Botan Yuki (Peony Snowflakes) -

The elegant woodblock print “Botan Yuki” (Peony Snowflakes) by Kotondo Torii (1900–1976) depicts a beautiful woman sheltering beneath an umbrella as large, soft snowflakes fall around her. The title Botan Yuki refers to large snowflakes whose appearance resembles delicate white peony petals.

Featuring exquisite bokashi shading and exceptionally detailed carving, particularly in the finely rendered individual strands of hair, the composition beautifully captures the refined elegance of Japanese bijin-ga. The softly falling snow, muted colors, and graceful pose create a serene and sophisticated winter atmosphere.

This print is from Torii’s celebrated series “Twelve Aspects of Woman,” originally published in 1931. This later edition was published by Ishu Kanko Kai in a limited edition of 100 prints and printed on fine Japanese washi paper featuring the “Sanso” watermark. The carver was Susumu Ito, and the printer was Yoshiaki Watanabe. The print features the Torii approval seal, indicating that this is an officially authorized edition, together with the publisher's distinctive red moneybag seal inscribed with the character “Ishu,” denoting Ishu Kanko Kai's publication rights. The limited-edition seal appears below the publisher's cartouche. The present impression is a later Shōwa-period edition.
