This magnificent extra-large woodblock print, “Yamataka Jindai Zakura” (Yamataka Jindai Cherry Blossoms), is by Seiji Sano. The print captures the immense cherry tree in full bloom beneath the moon, its blossoms resembling a veil of soft spring mist. Exquisite detail, along with delicate applications of gold and silver leaf, creates a truly superb and luminous beauty.
The Yamataka Jindai Sakura tree at Jisso-ji Temple is said to have been planted by Emperor Yamato Takeru during his expedition to the eastern provinces. The pale blossoms of this Edohigan cherry tree—believed to be around 2,000 years old and designated as a National Natural Monument—add to its legendary status. It is counted among Japan’s five most famous cherry trees and is also one of the three largest cherry trees in the country.
