This beautiful woodblock print, "Kokanji," from Noh play is by Ryoshu Yamaguchi (1886–1966). Published in 1954 by Kyoto Hanga-in, this piece showcases Yamaguchi's expertise in Noh-ga (Noh paintings), or Japanese painting specializing in Noh-related subjects. Please note the mica in the background and the intricate silver mica detailing. The artist's signature, "Ryoshu saku,"(block-signed) and red seal are located in the lower-left corner of the image. This print is a fantastic choice for collectors looking to create a stunning framed display of Japanese culture.
Ryoshu Yamaguchi was born in Kyoto in 1886. He was a Japanese painter who studied under Kokyo Taniguchi and became especially famous for his Noh paintings. As a Kyogen performer himself, he infused his work with superbly rendered and faithful details.
