The wonderful woodblock print 'Ushigome Kagurazaka' (Evening at Ushigome) is by Koitsu Tsuchiya (1870–1949). Ushigome Kagurazaka is near present-day Kagurazaka, Shinjuku, Tokyo. This print depicts a nighttime scene where women with umbrellas come and go down a long, narrow alley wet with rain. The lanterns of Doi Kappo restaurant and the light inside the restaurant reflect on the rain-filled water surface, creating a soft glow that gives you a sense of nostalgia.
Dated in 1939 (Showa 14 nen). This is a later printing by Hamamatsu-do. (*Doi publisher changed their company name to Hamamatsu-do in 1963 until 1981.) Artist's signature "Koitsu" and the artist's red seal in the lower right corner of the image. Supervisor's seal "Keizaburo Yamaguchi" on the upper left margin. Carver name: Harada, Printer name: Seki, Copyright seal "Doi" (red seal); publisher seal "Hamamatsu-do" with a red seal on the lower left margin. Titled 'Ushigome Kagurazaka' and dated "Showa 14 nen 8 gatsu (printed in 1939, August) on the right margin. It comes with the original folder and an explanation paper in Japanese.
