The superb silkscreen print Niijima Kiyari-jishi (Niijima Kiyari Lion Dance, Tokyo) is by Masaaki Tanaka (b. 1947). This work captures the powerful Lion Dance Festival of Niijima, a small island in Tokyo, Japan. The sheet number, Japanese title, and the artist’s signature are hand-signed along the bottom margin. This print is in a smaller format, with a paper size of 9 and 7/8 by 13 inches (25 cm x 33 cm).
Niijima Kiyari Lion Dance is a traditional performing art that has been passed down for generations on Niijima and has been designated an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Tokyo. Unlike typical lion dances, it is not accompanied by flutes or drums. Instead, singers known as Ondoshu perform Kiyari songs while a group of five people manipulate a centipede-like lion as it parades through the festival.
