The remarkable print “Kagerō” (Dragonfly) from The Tale of Genji is by Kaoru Saito. The Tale of Genji is a renowned work of Japanese literature written by Murasaki Shikibu in the early 11th century during the Heian period. It depicts the life of Hikaru Genji, the son of an emperor, and offers an intimate portrayal of the aristocratic society of the time.
Behind the story:
“Kagerō” (Dragonfly), from The Tale of Genji — The chapter title is derived from a waka poem composed by Prince Kaoru (the man depicted in this print), reflecting on his fateful encounters with the three sisters of Uji:
“Though I saw them there, I could not hold them in my hands; and when I finally thought I had them, they vanished without a trace, like dragonflies. Such were the princesses—fleeting as dragonflies. Was this connection fragile and ephemeral, or was it something more?”
In this print, the artist beautifully renders his pensive expression.
