The wonderful woodblock print "Fujiwara no Teika no Zu" (A Portrait of Fujiwara no Teika) is by Tanyu Kano (1602-1674), a renowned Japanese Nihon-ga painter of the Kano school. Fujiwara no Teika (1162-1241) was a poet of the early Kamakura period and is counted among the greatest of Japanese poets. He was also a famous anthologist. Teika's achievements have been praised, and many of them have been the subjects of paintings.
Subject explanation: When Teika goes out to the seashore, the moon rises across the lapping waves, and there is only one boat resting among the withered reeds, creating a scene of *Wabi-Sabi that is truly striking. Additionally, there is a waka poem by Teika in this print. It translates: "Looking around, there are no beautiful spring cherry blossoms or colored leaves. Autumn evening around a shabby thatched hut by the sea." (*Wabi-sabi is a Japanese aesthetic and worldview that embraces imperfection and transience).
Originally painted in the Edo period, this print was published by Tansei-sha in 1983. The publisher's seal, the printer's name "Kurazo Yoneda," and the carver's name "Sadao Uetani" are located in the right margin. It comes with an original explanatory paper (Japanese only, no English).
