This is a scene of Torinoichi or Cock Fair of Otori Shrine in Asakusa Paddy Field. The festival is held on the "Cock Days" in November. A Cock Day comes around every twelve days on the lunar calendar. The superstitious say there are frequent fires in a year which has three "Cock fairs". The fair is featured by the sale of bamboo rakes symbolic of good luck decorated with trinkets at the roadside stalls around the shrine. The festival attracted a large crowd of people, particularly merchants.
In the print is seen a long column of worshippers carrying lucky rakes on the footpath between the rice fields against a background of Mt. Fuji in the evening twilight. A cat is peeking outside through a latticed window of a resting house for harlots. Around here there were a number of such dormitories where they were allowed to rest or recuperate.
