This extremely rare woodblock print "追羽根- Oibane" (Playing Battledore) is by Tatsumi Shimura (1907-1980). From "Five Figures of Modern Beauties" (現代美人風俗五態 - Gendai Bijin Fuzoku Gotai). Oibane is a Japanese traditional game, played with a rectangular wooden paddle called a hagoita and a brightly colored shuttlecock. Often played by girls at the New Year in those days. Published by Nihon Hanga Kenkyusho. Publisher seal, pencil numbered, and hand-signed in bottom margin. Red Tatsumi seal and Tatsumi characters in the upper right of the image. Carver's seal Chushichi Nakagawa and the printer's seal Ryuji Onodera in the right margin. The deeply embossed title "Oibane" in Kanji in the center bottom margin. Her cheerful expression against a bright color background is so beautiful and refreshing. His print shows the beauty in one moment of a Japanese woman's natural gesture. Highly detailed carving. Beautiful colors. Lightly embossed. Absolutely stunning handmade woodblock print. This is an icon of the very best Japanese skill in woodblock prints.
