The beautiful woodblock print 'Kumejima no Orimoto' (Weaving Studio at Kumejima Island, Okinawa) is by Katsuyuki Nishijima, printed in 2015. The vibrant blue sky and traditional Okinawan house create an exotic atmosphere. The focal point is the Shisa (lion-dog) on the roof. Many people place Shisa on their rooftops, as they are believed to ward off evil spirits. The contrast and details in the artwork are stunning.

This weaving studio is the Kumejima-Tsumugi Studio. Kumejima-Tsumugi is a traditional Japanese silk weaving craft practiced in Kumejima, Okinawa. Among approximately two hundred forms of tsumugi, Kumejima-Tsumugi has the longest history and is the oldest kasuri fabric. It is recognized as one of Japan’s Important Intangible Cultural Properties.
