This beautiful print is published by Mokuhan print association which famous publishers join. It took six years to complete this series "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo". Size is the same as the original. The carver used traditional cherrywood (mostly plywood nowadays). The printer used traditional Echizen pure Japanese washi paper. They used traditional carving tools, printing tools, and ink which is also used on the original. The carving and the printing is faithful to the original. Just stunning and beautiful. Please see the details.
In 1842 Mizuno Echizen no kami, the chief minister of the Tokugawa Government, proclaimed the Tempo Reform and clamped tight controls on social customs and behavior. Pornographic pictures were banned and theaters were also affected. Ichimuraza, Nakamuraza and Moritaza theaters, together with actors and others connected with the theaters, were moved to an out-of-the-way place between the Sensoji Temple and Yoshiwara. The new site of Saruwaka was named after the founder of Kabuki play. Ironically the new theater quarters drew more people than ever before.
In the left is a tea-house where theater-goers dined and made reservations for shows. In the right are theaters-Moritaza in the foreground, Ichimuraza next and Nakamuraza the farthest. Thin cloud shading in the lower part of the moon is a 'random' addition by the printer. A similar shading is seen in Komakata Temple by Azumabashi Bridge. The form or location of such insertions out of the printer's freak are various. The shading is omitted in later prints.
Hiroshige Ando (1797 - 1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, considered the last great master of that tradition. Hiroshige is best known for his landscapes, such as the series "The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido", "The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kiso Kaido" and "One Hundred Famous View of Edo".
