Very fine woodblock print "Rain at Gion" is by Takeji Asano. This is one of "Kyoraku Meisho" (Famous Places of Kyoto) series. Titled "Gion Kosame" (Rain at Gion), Dated "Showa 30nen" (1955) and "Takeji ga, koku" (Drawn and carved by Takeji) on the lower right of image with red seal.
Dated "Showa 39 nen" (1964), Takeji suri (printed by Takeji) on the lower left margin. There are two dates on this print. (drawn and carved in 1955, Printed in 1964)
Takeji started to work for this "Kyoraku Meisho series" (12 designs) in 1955.
Very lovely rainy scene.

Gion is a district of Kyoto, originally developed in the Middle Ages, in front of Yasaka Shrine. The district was built to accommodate the needs of travelers and visitors to the shrine. It eventually evolved to become one of the most exclusive and well-known geisha districts in all of Japan.
