Summer Time 2

Kunio Kaneko

Fabulous woodblock "Summer Time 2" is by Kunio Kaneko. Slightly embossed. The very neat atmosphere. This print shows the Japanese game "Kingyo - Sukui" in summer. "Kingyo - Sukui" Goldfish scooping is a traditional Japanese game in which a player scoops goldfish with a special scooper with very thin Japanese washi paper. It is easy to break when it gets wet. It is a very hard game.  "Kingyo" means goldfish and "sukui" means scooping. Japanese summer festivals or ennichi commonly have a stall for this activity. Both children and adults enjoy the game. This game started in the late Edo period, around 1810. Today it is so popular that stalls can be found at many "summer festivals" in Japan.
