Shiba Benten Ike (Pond at Shiba Benten)

Hasui Kawase

"Shiba Benten Ike" (Pond at Shiba Benten) is by Kawase Hasui (1883-1957). Excellent shading throughout with light embossing to the lotus leaves and women on the footbridge. First printed 1929 originally by Kawaguchi & Sakai; this is a later printing by Shobisha from original blocks. Shobisha obtained the original blocks in about 1950. Signed Kawase Hasui with red artist seal "sui". Bottom margin contains title "Shiba Benten Ike"(Pond at Shiba Benten) and "Showa 4 nen 8 gatsu saku"(printed in August 1929) in Japanese. New condition, never framed and full margins. A few typical faint ink smudge on the margin. Very wonderful "bokashi" shading through print with finely carved details. Old master quality.  Very Japanese mood, very soft romantic colors beautiful and delicate.  A true classic Hasui print of the highest order.
