Kiyochika Kobayashi

Beautiful woodblock print "Senbongui - Ryogokubashi" (The Thousand piles by the Ryogoku Bridge) is by Kiyochika Kobayashi (1847-1915).  This is a re-carved edition. Originally printed in 1880. This print was published by Maria Shobo in 1976. "マ" which is from "Maria Shobo" appears just below the box on the lower right margin. Signed on the lower right of the image.  Title on the bottom margin,  date "Meiji 13 nen"(1880), Original Publisher name "Kumajiro Fukuda" and Artist name "Kiyochika Kobayashi" on the right margin.  Amazing bokashi shading and wonderful composition.

The thousand piles were situated on the joining point of two rivers (Sumida and Kanda ), while on the point the river Sumida curves greatly. By the reason of this curve, the bank where the current struck was guarded by a large number of piles.
