Fine woodblock print “Kumejima no orimoto” (Weaving studio at Kumejima Island, Okinawa) is by Katuyuki Nishjima. Printed in 2015. The beautiful blue sky and typical Okinawa house are a very exotic mood. The focal point is the “Shisa” (Lion dog) on the roof. Many people put Shisa on their rooftops. Shisa are wards believed to protect from various devils. Fabulous contrast.
This weaving studio is Kumejima-tsumugi studio. Kumejima-tsumugi is the Japanese craft of silk cloth practiced in Kumejima, Okinawa. Kumejima tsumugi has the longest history of approximately two hundred forms of tsumugi and is the oldest Kasuri fabric. It is recognized as one of the important intangible cultural properties of Japan.
