Ai-Kaiso (Indigo Blue Recollection)

Koichi Maeda

1866

Very beautiful woodblock print "Ai-Kaiso"(Indigo Blue Recollection) is by Koichi Maeda. I asked Maeda about this print. He said, "This town was very well known as the town of indigo blue dye industry a long time ago. Many people of this town made wealthy by indigo blue dye industry and built a big house until synthetic dye became popular. Now this town is very quiet. Even though these old days are gone, these big houses remain now in stillness. I was walking along the street and thinking about old days,"Please notice the wall has indigo blue color. It speaks by itself. The artist wanted to chisel the thoughts and our hearts become sometimes very passionate with nostalgia. This print shows a beauty of Japanese architecture.
