Surugacho (One Hundred Famous Views of Edo)

Hiroshige Ando (1797 - 1858)

2537

This beautiful print is published by Mokuhan print association which famous publishers join. It took six years to complete this series "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo".  Size is the same as the original. The carver used traditional cherrywood (mostly plywood nowadays). The printer used traditional Echizen pure Japanese washi paper.  They used traditional carving tools, printing tools, and ink which is also used on the original. The carving and the printing is faithful to the original. Just stunning and beautiful. Please see the details.

The picture shows two fine views of Edo in Hiroshige's times Mt. Fuji as seen from the hilly Surugacho and Echigoya Draper Shop at Surugacho. These two were the favorite subjects of Hokusai. Hiroshige and other ukiyo-e painters.

The picture of Mt. Fuji towering above the clouds painted in bluish purple, yellow, dark blue, light crimson colors is splendid indeed if a little too decorative.

Echigoya started a business here in 1683 and immediately won general popularity in Edo. It's motto "cash payment and reasonable prices" appealed to the people. Credit sale payable only twice a year in July and December was the common practice at the time.

Hiroshige Ando (1797 - 1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, considered the last great master of that tradition. Hiroshige is best known for his landscapes, such as the series "The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido",  "The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kiso Kaido" and "One Hundred Famous View of Edo".
