This beautiful print is published by Mokuhan print association which famous publishers join. It took six years to complete this series "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo".  Size is the same as the original. The carver used traditional cherrywood (mostly plywood nowadays). The printer used traditional Echizen pure Japanese washi paper.  They used traditional carving tools, printing tools, and ink which is also used on the original. The carving and the printing is faithful to the original. Just stunning and beautiful. Please see the details.

The print is fine both in composition and printing. But a discerning eye will notice misprinting in the part under the arched bridge. Experts say deep blue, that is, the same color to paint Shinji Pond, is not fitting here. The misprinting is corrected in later runs. Thus you can easily tell whether a print of this scene is from the first edition or not. 

The shrine enjoyed the special patronage of the Tokugawa Government. The shrine buildings, pond and the gate were all patterned after those of its head shrine at Dazaifu in Fukuoka in the southern main island of Kyushu.  The shrine precinct has also been famous for the wisterias which bloom in May and embellish the pond. 

Hiroshige Ando (1797 - 1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, considered the last great master of that tradition. Hiroshige is best known for his landscapes, such as the series "The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido",  "The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kiso Kaido" and "One Hundred Famous View of Edo".
