The one hundred thousand "坪" tsubo (about 80 acres) Land is today Ishijima, Senda and Umibe, Sengoku in Koto Ward sandwiched in between the Simida and Ara River and facing Edo Bay in the south. The area and its adjoining Sunamura-Shinden and Hachiemon- Shinden were the low-lying marsh overgrown with reeds.
Hiroshige painted the snow-covered bleak trackless moor spreading under a wild eagle soaring in the sky. He must have borrowed the sharp eyes and powerful wings of the bird to depict the desolation of the wasteland. Mt. Tsukuba is drawn yonder. Lacquer is used in the beak in the first edition.
Hiroshige Ando (1797 - 1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, considered the last great master of that tradition. Hiroshige is best known for his landscapes, such as the series "The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido", "The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kiso Kaido" and "One Hundred Famous View of Edo".

The picture shows two fine views of Edo in Hiroshige's times Mt. Fuji as seen from the hilly Surugacho and Echigoya Draper Shop at Surugacho. These two were the favorite subjects of Hokusai. Hiroshige and other ukiyo-e painters.
The picture of Mt. Fuji towering above the clouds painted in bluish purple, yellow, dark blue, light crimson colors is splendid indeed if a little too decorative.
Echigoya started a business here in 1683 and immediately won general popularity in Edo. It's motto "cash payment and reasonable prices" appealed to the people. Credit sale payable only twice a year in July and December was the common practice at the time.
