Street in the Evening

Kawamata Jogyo

2754

Wonderful woodblock print "Yoru no machi" (Street in the Evening) is by Tsuneyuki (Jogyo)  Kawamata (1677- ? ). From the series "The Nippon Mokuhan Gashu" (Masterpieces of Old Japanese Colour prints). The publisher is Bijutsusha in Tokyo. Printed in 1928. (Showa 3 nen) Truly elegant Bijin print with amazing details. Nice bold colors.  Please see the pictures.

Being a well-known artist in the Genroku era (1688-1703), Kawamata displayed his skill in producing colored pictures mainly on paper canvas (not fit for wood-engraving). He possessed notably the powerful sense for creating pictures of strikingly decorative beauty. No tradition is traceable about his master and native province.

Technique: Woodblock
Paper size: 7 and 3/4 inches by 12 and 1/2 inches (19.6 x 31.5 cm)
Signed: Tsuneyuki (Jogyo)  with a red seal on the lower right of the image.
Condition: The print is in excellent condition. A natural paper wrinkles on the upper right of the image which is hardly noticeable. Please see the last picture. The print came off from the original presentation folder. However, it still comes with a folder.
