The beautiful woodblock print “Flowering Grasses” is by Kuninao Utagawa (1793–1854). The print is in a horizontal round-fan (uchiwa-e) format, depicting the moon and flowering grasses in autumn. The cultivated chrysanthemums in three colors enhance the tender, seasonal atmosphere. This is a graceful and refined Japanese design featuring the classic “moon-viewing” (tsukimi) theme. In Japan, it is a tradition to arrange autumn flowers in a vase and enjoy the full moon.
Originally created in the Edo period, this is a recarved edition published by Adachi in the Showa era. The print features bautiful colors, intricate details. Adachi’s embossing mark appears in the lower left corner. Please take a moment to appreciate the superb craftsmanship and elegant design of this piece. It comes with an explanation sheet in both Japanese and English.
