Kinryuzan Sensoji Temple (One Hundred Famous Views of Edo)

Hiroshige Ando (1797 - 1858)

2539

This beautiful print is published by Mokuhan print association which famous publishers join. It took six years to complete this series "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo".  Size is the same as the original. The carver used traditional cherrywood (mostly plywood nowadays). The printer used traditional Echizen pure Japanese washi paper.  They used traditional carving tools, printing tools, and ink which is also used on the original. The carving and the printing is faithful to the original. Just stunning and beautiful. Please see the details.

This is a snow scene of the main gate and the five-storied pagoda of the famed Sensoji Temple seen from Kaminarimon Gate in Asakusa. It is one of the masterpieces in this set.  The temple building and the pagoda in red and green set off the snow scenery.  The blank printing of the snow intensified the sense of snow depth. Hiroshige depicted in another print the temple and a row of visitors carrying umbrellas in the snow in the compound.

The temple commonly called the Kannon Temple of Asakusa is dedicated to Kannon or the Goddess of Mercy.

Records say the temple was first built in 628 by three government officials who found a tiny Kannon image about 5.5 centimeters in height in their nets while fishing in the Sumida River. The building was reduced to ashes times in 1378, 1535,  1631.... and 1945, and reconstructed in 1958. Kaminarimon Gate and the main temple gate were rebuilt in 1960 and 1964, respectively.

Hiroshige Ando (1797 - 1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, considered the last great master of that tradition. Hiroshige is best known for his landscapes, such as the series "The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido",  "The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kiso Kaido" and "One Hundred Famous View of Edo".
